Everglades City Trip Report
April 21, 2009

At 10:15 am twelve boats left the Coon Key Light headed out on a day-long adventure, thru the mangroves, to The Rod & Gun Club for lunch and returning to Marco in time for dinner.

The trip to Everglades City, and our lunch, were both very enjoyable and we were joined by MBYCers that elected to drive down to join us at the historic Club.  In fact, Paul and Helen Meyer, and their companions, were unexpected drivers after their boat suffered overheating problems just after departing Coon Key.  In all about 70 people joined up for lunch on a beautiful Florida day.

Our return cruise back to Marco was little more adventurous!  Our group encountered a little shallow water the closer we got to Marco.  At one point 8 boats became separated from our Coast Guard Auxiliary leader and found ourselves either in extremely shallow water or stuck on bottom.  In the end two boats overheated from plugged water intakes and needed to be towed.  Our thanks to Bob Herndon, Brent Cook and The Coast Guard Auxiliary for their assistance in towing our stranded members.  To protect the stranded we are withholding both the crippled boat names and the names of the Captains.

A number of Club members were overheard saying what a great adventure it turned out to be……..I think those were members that were not stranded!

Our special thanks to the members of the Marco Island Coast Guard Auxiliary for leading us on this great trip and their special assistance to those needing extra help!
