COMMODORE’S MESSAGE
Well, another month has gone by and the weather has not been cooperating at all this year, not only for boating events but everything else. Our Everglades City trip on the 9th was canceled due to poor participation, but I think that the weather had a lot to do with it. On the 20th we had our Gilligan’s Island picnic and the weather finally cooperated. We had a great day. As I’m writing this, twelve boats are on the Sarasota cruise with stops on the way led by Al and Ginny Rapp.
Our turnout for Monday Madness was a little small at the Old Marco Lodge, again because of cool weather, and members having company or cruising to Marina Jacks. Shelly had four nice specials but unfortunately there was not enough interest this month so she canceled them. Even though the turnout was small, everybody still has a good time.
In April we have three events plus our Monday Madness. Friday April 2nd is the Panther Key cookout and overnight on the hook. Saturday April 10th is the Wild Goose Chase, always a fun day. Then from the 14 to the 16th (Friday to Sunday) is Port of the Islands weekend, another fun time. Please look at you calendars and get your reservations in. Finally Monday Madness is the 26th.
It’s time to start thinking about the Christmas boat and street parade. There are rumors that the boat parade will be earlier in the month this year, and if that is the case, I would like to see two or three of our boats in the parade. If you are thinking about this, please let me know as so we can start making plans. Also we will want to put a boat in the street parade.
We are starting to wind down there for the summer. In May we have the trip to Naples and Monday Madness.
We want to give our condolences to Bill Walsh and his family for the loss of Joan; she will be greatly missed. Also one of our past commodores, Bill Key, died last month. He was commodore in 1983/85 and has been an honorary member as long as I can remember. He was a combat pilot in WW II and Korea. Arlene Key thanked us for the many years of remembrance and said that MBYC remained very close to his heart to the end of this remarkable life.
For all the members who will be heading north this month, have a save trip and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall when you get back.
Your Commodore, Bill Horton
